Do’s and don’ts for your Michigan Summer senior portraits
Summer in Michigan is awesome! Lakes, flowers, sunshine, cute downtowns & more. It is my favorite time for senior portraits since it’s the time of year that our weather is the most reliable (which is rare), there’s no school and life just feels a little less hectic.
So for my summer seniors here are some tips to help your session go smootly and avoid some common mistakes!

Do – Consider warm temps when choosing what to wear
Michigan summers can be hot and humid, especially in July and August. Expect warm weather when choosing your outfits! I shoot my summer sessions in the morning because it’s the coolest part of the day and it’s the light I like to shoot in. I often recommend wearing your warmest outfit first when it is the coolest (think: suits, layers, etc) and save the coolest outfits as the day gets warmer.

Don’t – Stress about the weather
If I’m being honest predicting our Michigan weather is the worst part of my job. However, the advantage of a summer session is we have some time, unlike the Fall when the weather could take a dramatic turn at any minute. I only book a certain number of sessions per month to leave flexiblilty to reschedule due to weather. Don’t check the weather a week before your session, it’ll likely change 10 times. Check it the day before and reach out if you’re nervous and you haven’t heard from me.

Do – Be prepared for the elements
Depending on your location you may want to bring some items to make the session go smoothly.
- Bug spray so you don’t get eaten up.
- Closed toe shoes for comfort while walking from one spot to the next and to protect yourself while walking in tall grasses and fields. You can change back to the shoes that go with your outfit once we’re setup.
- Consider bringing a small towel or blotting paper to keep shine at bay if it’s humid.

Don’t – Get a spray tan or lay out in the sun before
I know many seniors want to have a little color for their session but last-minute tans can be problematic. I personally think you look your best with your natural look. However, if you really want to have a little color, do not try to do it within a week or two of your session! You don’t want to burn, look orange or have tan lines.

And it’s always a do to ask your photographer if you need any help with details and questions! I’m here to help the experience be enjoyable and make your summer session what you have envisioned.
