A what to wear series

Choosing what to wear for your headshot portraits can be stressful. I send my clients a welcome guide with what to wear tips and inspiration. I also make myself available for questions. You want to be confident and look great! Below is some what to wear inspiration and tips from real clients sessions to help when choosing what to wear for your headshot portraits.

  • Suit – You can’t go wrong with a well-fitting suit for a professional, pulled together look. It’s a classic for a reason. Lisa looks professional and pulled together.
  • Jacket – Jackets are versatile because they can be dressed up or down, formal or casual, and show your personality/style. Maria’s jacket has personality, style and fits well.
  • Elevated basics – Elevated basics are a really great way to take classic pieces and add a little interest and style. Jayne done a great job of choosing classic pieces with some elevated details. The pleating at the shoulders and sleeve on her top and her jeans have front pocket detail.
  • Business casual – You can’t go wrong with a nice top in a good fabric. Alexa’s classic button-down is a nice natural fabric, has pocket details, and a great color. It’s professional without being stuffy.
  • Mix it up – Don’t forget about fabrics, texture, and pattern. Rosa does a great job mixing her top with sheer sleeves and poke-a-dots, and leather pants. Because it’s all in the same color, it works really well.
  • Work wear – Sometimes, wearing a uniform is the way to go. It can instantly let people know what field you’re in. I like how Vicki added some personality to her scrubs with the pops of pink front her tie and shoes.
  • Structure and fit- Clothing that is tailored, structured and fits well goes a long way to looking good on camera. Christine’s jacket fits her perfectly and is a structured fabric. She’s also doing the mix of fabrics (mentioned above) with the velvet pants.
  • Texture – If your style is simple and classic and you like neutral colors pick pieces with texture.
  • Color and pattern – Don’t be affraid of color and pattern if it fits your personality. It can still look professional with the right fit and fabrics.
