A what to wear series
Hey guys, what you wear for your headshots and branding session matters. I know not every man is into fashion, but how you look in your headshots is often your first impression, and your style factors into this! You want to give confidence, so let me help with a few ideas.
The classic Suit
A suit is a standard professional classic for a reason! You can’t go wrong wearing a suit for your headshots; however, it must fit properly! A perfectly fitted suit should feel tailored but comfortable, with smooth, wrinkle-free fabric. If you are unclear if your suit needs altering, a quick Google will tell you how a suit should fit and, if needed, find a tailor!
There are a surprising number of ways to wear a suit and bring personality to your look! Shoes, shirt, and tie show your style. You can also add accessories like cufflinks or a pocket square. Using pieces of your suit separately is a good way to change it up. Wearing the jacket with a t-shirt and jeans gives a more casual look. Pairing your pants with a button-down shirt is a business casual look. If you have a vest, you can wear the pants and vest and leave off the jacket.

Wear Layers
A quick hack to looking stylish is using layers! It doesn’t have to be complicated either. A collared shirt under a thin sweater, a casual jacket over a t-shirt, a hoodie under a suit coat, a t-shirt under a quarter zip etc. Adding more then one layer to your outfit makes it feel more intentional.

Work wear
Sometimes, wearing a uniform or work-related clothing is the way to go. Your clothing can instantly speak for you, letting people know what field you’re in and your expertise. This doesn’t work for everyone but it’s a nice option for those that it does.

The details
Fabrics, color, pattern, and details are all what bring your personality to the outfit. The fabric of a button-up can feel corporate and professional or more casual. A bold print on a shirt expresses your personality, as does a classic solid blue. From your belt and shoes, to the colors you wear are all ways your personality comes through.

The musts
Lastly, when you are pulling outfits together, don’t forget the following!
- Try everything on! Don’t assume an item of clothing still fits properly that you haven’t worn in 6 months. The fit of your clothing is super important!!!
- Cheap fabrics look cheap. Natural fabrics like cotton, linen, leather, etc. are classic and look and wear better.
- As for help if you need it! Go to a tailor, ask a stylist at a store, get advice from a stylish friend, or your wife/girlfriend.
